A movie, also known as motion picture or film, is a simulation of an experience that communicates ideas, stories, perceptions and emotions, through the use of moving images.
There are so many genres and a [pardon my French] sh*tload of movies out there. Bad ones, great ones, cult ones, mainstream ones, there is a movie for each and everyone of us and that is the beauty of movies.
Having worked in Product and Digital Delivery, born in the 80s and raised in the 90s there are some iconic movies that are a must see for anyone working in product.
Spoiler Alert: okay following should be taken with a grain of salt. I have taken some creative liberty and rewrote legendary movies, to make them even more suitable and recognisable for those of us, going out there each and everyday, bringing our best, to create and delivery initiatives and products that sway our customers and inspire those involved.
Let’s be real here, that right there was an Oscar worthy monologue.
With no further ado here are the top 5 movies you need to watch if you are working in Product
1. Briandropping
The Academy Award-nominated screenplay by Sharpwitted follows a group of creatives in an economically depressed are of Edinburgh on their journey to Product Domination. Beyond brainstorming and creating a disruptive new product, the film includes an exploration of the wonders of how groupthink can create brilliant products.
2. Always Right Club
A depressed Product Manager suffering from insomnia meets a strange soap salesman and soon finds himself living in his squalid house after his perfect apartment is destroyed. The two men form an underground club, for product manager that lives by 3 strict rules
- Leaders are right a lot.
- They have strong judgement and good instincts.
- They seek diverse perspectives and work to disconfirm their beliefs.
The Product Managers in the club seek each other’s insights and ideas to how to make of their product that what their customers need it to be.
3. Vision Possible
The film follows the Products main delivery team under the leadership of Hunt who are tasked to deliver a once in a lifetime disruptive product.
The team faces a lot of challenges and needs to manage through adversity beyond imagination and all they have to help him is a clear, meaningful and impactful vision, that drives and guides them to achieve excellence.
4. Priorities Unknown
Priorities unknown is a hilarious film about a young product manager who is accidentally given a product that is about to be hijacked by two con men who have their own ideas about what the product needs to be, without thinking about the true value and customer needs. The young product manager will need to manage until the senior Product Manager returns from holiday and keep the product on track by rigorously prioritising and keeping the con men from destroying the product.
5. Goodvalues
Goodvalues is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, particularly as it speaks to the minimum any company/product needs to be successful.
It tells the story of what is needed to grow, develop and create the future that customers want to experience. The choices of the main character, in the movie, emphasises that the main decisions we make are a reflection of our values and beliefs, and they are always directed towards a specific purpose.
